Perfect Bread for Italian Sausage Soup

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the yeast water to the flour and mix with a spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it to coat. Cover and let it rise for 1-2 hours or until doubled.
  6. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf.
  7. Bake on a baking sheet for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Let it cool before slicing.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of Italian herbs to the dough.
  • Brush the top with melted butter before baking for a golden crust.
  • If dough is too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time.
